Lady Hawk XC Runs In Joliet

The Broadus Cross Country team raced in Joliet last week, for their final regular season race before State. Runners in Joliet for the Lady Hawks included Rebekah Rasmussen, Alix Heacock, and Rheanna Schroeder. The course in Joliet is a bit different than most Cross Country races in that instead of taking place on a golf course or “across country”, it essentially winds through town, ending on the school track.

Broadus XC Coach Ashley Emmons told us that the Broadus runners’ times were down a bit compared to previous performances by Broadus teams in Joliet, despite the ideal running weather.

Rasmussen crossed the line in 26:06 for 25th place, Heacock ran a 28:01 for 32nd, and Schroeder placed 33rd with a 28:35.

This week the team prepares for the State race in Missoula, with the full team qualified for the event, including the three runners mentioned earlier, as well as Mercy Brost and Gracey Bradley. All five runners will compete at State, while the fastest three runners to cross the finish line will place for the team. Emmons told us that every runner on the team is still vitally important, in that every member of an opposing team beaten by the Broadus 4th and 5th place runners means a better score overall for Broadus, helping their chances against the other Class C teams from across the state.

The training this week will consist of speed drills and not much for long distance work, as the training tapers to put the runners at their optimum performance in Missoula.

On Thursday the team plans to leave, overnighting in Butte before continuing on to Missoula on Friday. That day the team will preview the course, and will return on Saturday for the main event. The Class C Girls runners will take off at 1:30 pm, having the chance to watch other runners and perhaps have some insight into the course before their own race.
