The Lady Hawk Cross Country Team ran at Colstrip last week, as they wind down their season and look forward to State.
With only one more race on the horizon at Joliet before the State Meet on October 20th in Missoula, Broadus XC Coach Ashley Emmons told us during a Monday interview that with all members of the team already qualified for State, they are looking towards Missoula. The course at Colstrip, which is run on the golf course and features a big hill at the end of the run, was worked into the training program with the longer term goal of having peak performance at Missoula.
Over the past few weeks the team has been steadily working more challenging runs into their training program, with a combination of speed practices, distance running, and hills. The last meets of the season are another step up in challenge for the runners, with the end goal of peaking at State.
Broadus runner Rebekah Rasmussen led the Lady Hawk team at Colstrip with a 25:50, placing 20th in the varsity race. Alix Heacock placed 24th with a 28:54, and Gracey Bradley placed 25th, running a 29:02. Mercy Brost placed 8th in the JV with a 30:58.
With several runners including Rheanna Schroeder suffering sore body parts, Emmons made the decision to keep the team home from the meet at Huntley, which had been scheduled for last Saturday. Emmons' decision harkened back to the long term goal of having the team ready for State: "It's that point in the season where everyone has some bumps and bruises and another race wasn't going to help the team recover," she noted.
The extra time off gives the Lady Hawks a full week between races, as they finish out their regular season at Joliet on the 13th. This race, according to Emmons, is a bit different than most XC races in that it begins on the track and runs around and through the town of Joliet, before finishing again on the track.
Following the Joliet race the Lady Hawks will tone down their training in order to be fully recovered as they set their sites on Missoula.
