Recently, I was lying in a hospital bed listening to a doctor explain his concern with the ability or inability of antibiotics to treat my infection. The over-use of antibiotics is becoming a huge medical problem diminishing their effectiveness. I replied that I was employed in the people business and understand the problem. You are faced with patients who demand you do something immediately to make them feel better or they will find another physician who will. The doctor replied, “you are correct, that is exactly what is going on”. I quickly realized that I was naive to think my profession was the only one to encounter this issue. Our society’s desire for immediate gratification does have unintended consequences.
