Lady Hawks Are Now 18-0

The Lady Hawk volleyball team had a long week of matches last week, as they played at St. Labre on Tuesday, at home against Jordan in a five game match on Thursday, and traveled to Ekalaka for a tournament on Saturday. Broadus won every match, improving to 18-0 on the season, with Zeason Schaffer breaking a school record in the process.

The team only had two full practices, one on Monday and another Wednesday, as well as one shorter practice on Friday to prepare for the matches, but were able to roll through the competition at St. Labre in three straight games on Tuesday, winning 25-13, 25-17, and 25-14.

"St. Labre is much improved from last year," Broadus Coach Gordon Archer commented on the match.

When describing the match against Jordan on Thursday, Archer said: "We knew they would come in determined to try and beat us, and we maybe didn't prepare quite as well as we would've wanted."

Jordan used that determination to take the first game over the Lady Hawks 25-21, but in the second and third games Broadus came hard, winning 25-17 and 25-13. In the fourth game the momentum shifted back towards Jordan, as they won 25-19, forcing a fifth and final game, which Broadus won 18-16.

"We battled in the fifth game and it could've gone either way, but we came out on top," Archer said. "Like I told the girls, good teams find a way to win."

When Archer went through the stats after the match, he noted that Zeason Schaffer had 30 kills. After looking through the records, Archer found that Schaffer had broken the Broadus single match kill record, previously held by Sage Collins, who had 27.

On Saturday, the Lady Hawks traveled to Ekalaka for a tournament featuring three game matches, with the first two to 25 and the third to 15.

Perhaps feeling the stress of the week and the unknowns of an injury to schoolmate and ardent Hawk volleyball supporter Cooper Zimmer in the football game on Friday night, the Lady Hawks fell behind in their first match to Baker's JV, trailing 6-0. The team then seemed to come alive, beating Baker 25-14 and 25-14.

Broadus next played Circle, a team they knew would be gunning for a win after Broadus beat them at home earlier this season. In the first game Broadus lost 24-26, but came back to win 25-23 in the second and 15-12 in the third.

At that point, Archer said, the team seemed to relax and play their game their way, and in the next match faced Jordan for the second time in three days.

This time around Broadus was more in control, beating Jordan 25-16 and 25-22 in two straight matches, and setting up a match against Circle in the championship.

The tournament championship match was a best of five affair, similar to a normal regular season match.

This time around Broadus was challenged by Circle in the first game but pulled out ahead to win 25-23, and took the second set 25-19. By then the wind seemed to fall out of Circle's sails, and Broadus won the third set, the match, and the tournament with a score of 25-14.

The Lady Hawks have now won all three tournaments in which they've played this season – at Fairview, Belle Fourche, and now at Ekalaka, and sit first in the 2C conference with an 8-0 record. Circle is in second with a 5-1 record, and Jordan sits at 5-2.

This week Broadus travels to Savage for a non-conference match on Friday, and the girls play at home against Circle on Saturday.
