The Broadus Lady Hawk Cross Country team ran at the Custer County Invitational last Saturday. The race was held at the Miles City Town and Country Club, a location which Broadus XC Coach Ashley Emmons noted led to nice times for the runners, especially due to the flat nature of the golf course in Miles City.
Sophomore Rebekah Rasmussen led the Lady Hawks with a 25:02. Sophomore Alix Heacock, running in her first XC race ran a 28:13, and Freshman Gracey Bradley ran a 28:52 in her first varsity race. Seniors Rheanna Schroeder ran a 29:14, and Mercy Brost a 29:46.
Emmons told us that Rheanna is suffering from hip pain and will likely miss the remaining regular season races in order to be ready to return to state later this month. The timing for Schroeder’s return bodes well for the team, as all five runners on the team are now qualified for state.
Ashley said that having five qualified runners for state is a huge deal for the team, as all five will be able to run, while the top three scores will place. The other two additional runners are very important in that every opposing team competitor they place in front of will add points to the other teams’ score (with fewer points equaling a better performance), essentially pushing the other teams lower in the standings. In the past, Broadus only had three runners at state.
Upcoming races for the Lady Hawks include the Colstrip Invite this Thursday, the Huntley Project Invitational on Saturday, and the Joliet Invitational on October 13th, before heading to State in Missoula on October 22nd.
