The Broadus varsity football team improved to a 3-2 record after beating Harlem, last Saturday at a non-conference game in Circle.
Broadus came out swinging, allowing Harlem to score once in the first quarter and once in the fourth quarter against the Broadus JV, while racking up 38 of their own points, to finish the game with a score of 38-14.
Broadus was solid on offense against Harlem, putting up 351 rushing yards in the game, with 187 yards in the first half and 164 yards in the second half. Cooper Zimmer led the team in rushing with an astounding 226 yards of rushing.
Zimmer also passed for 80 yards, completing 55% of his passes.
Broadus had 14 rushing first downs in the game, 3 passing first downs, and 1 first down due to a penalty from Harlem.
On the defensive side of the ball the Hawks had a big day, with Paysen Kuhbacher leading the charge by sacking the Harlem QB five times. Kuhbacher also had a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
Stats on Harlem's total offensive and defensive numbers were not available.
The Hawk defense also forced a safety, adding two points to the board.
Broadus Head Coach Wyatt Williams spoke to us about the game on Monday: "We knew we were in shape going into the game, so we used a hurry up offense and didn't huddle, and just kept running the ball. After they bit hard on the run we started to pass, and were able to drive the ball down the field."
He continued, speaking about the defense: "We had a lot to work on coming off the game against Joliet, and we had a solid defensive day against Harlem. The defense stayed on assignment and was able to penetrate into the backfield. We showed what we are capable of when we play our game."
Broadus will now face Park City at home, this Friday. Park City lost to Forsyth 22-12 in a game earlier this season, and currently sit at a 1-3 overall record. As a matter of comparison, Forsyth lost to Joliet 52-0 last week, compared to the Hawks' 68-0 loss to Joliet two weeks ago.
Williams' goal against Park City is to stick to his game plan and continue to pound the ball in the running game as they look to seal up another win.
The top two teams from the Southeastern 8 man go to the playoffs, with Joliet currently sitting in number 1 with a 3-0 conference record. Forsyth has a 2-1 conference record and Broadus shares a 1-1 conference record with Park City, so a win this Friday is important as the Hawks look towards the post-season, with conference games against St. Labre and Forsyth still to play.
