The Hawk Football team traveled to Lavina last week to play Belt in a non-conference game. Broadus Head Coach Wyatt Williams told us conditions were hot for the game. Lavina did an excellent job of providing for the teams, with towels and cold water made available for the sweaty, hot athletes.
"Belt is a well coached team," Williams said during a Monday interview. "They are an athletic team like us, not an overly large team, but they play exceptionally well."
Williams noted that Broadus played decently in the first half, with their only touchdown of the game coming on a Cooper Zimmer 40 yard run in the second quarter. Zimmer would lead the team with 43 rushing yards, as well as throwing for 92 yards in total.
Belt led 22-8 at the half, and was able to use their stellar defense to keep the Hawks scoreless in the second half, eventually winning by a score of 50-8.
"They're a good team," Wyatt noted. Indeed, Belt was able to hold the Hawks to only three first downs on the day, and kept the Hawk rushing attack at bay.
The stats tell the tale, as Broadus averaged a paltry 1.5 yards per carry on offense in the game, while throwing for 92 total yards. Most of that offense came in the first half, with 125 yards in total offense, and 19 in the second half.
Williams noted that Eli Heacock played exceptionally well on defense, getting in on five tackles and a pass deflection. Jaxon Bilbrey led the Hawks in tackles, with seven unassisted tackles in the game.
Zimmer completed 4 of 18 passes, but threw no interceptions. A bright spot in the game was the lack of turnovers for the Hawks, which was a problem they've had in some years past.
Several Broadus players sustained injuries during the Belt game including James Augare, Reuben Kinzer, and Kail Irish. All three players are expected to return; Williams told us that the players are on a day to day basis at the moment.
In a change from previous schedules, Broadus will travel to Lodge Grass for a conference game on Saturday; times were still up in the air as of Thursday evening. The game has the potential to be a true athletic match as Broadus hopes to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Next weekend Broadus will host powerhouse conference rival Joliet for Homecoming. At the beginning of the season Joliet handily beat Scobey 42-6, and Scobey went on last weekend to beat Ekalaka by a score of 36-6. Broadus beat the Bulldogs the first week of the season with a score of 26-20.
With the shortened Labor Day week, the Broadus team will work on blocking and tackling skills as they head into the meat of the season in the coming weeks.
Stats from the Belt game are attached to this article; stats from the Ekalaka game are still in the works.
