Lady Hawks Win First In Fairview Tourney

The Lady Hawk Varsity volleyball team opened up their season with a series of wins, as Broadus hosted Plevna last Friday and traveled to Fairview, winning that tournament on Saturday.

Longtime coach Gordon Archer leads the Lady Hawks again this season, with a more mature team than in some years past, where Broadus played a number of Freshmen and Sophomores. Now with three Seniors on the team including Lauryn Billing, Oliveah Schaffer, and Lucinda Cain, the Lady Hawks hope to use their experience to face the conference teans, featuring powerhouse Circle, as well as perennially tough teams like Jordan and Ekalaka.

Twenty Lady Hawks are out for volleyball in the high school, split between Varsity and JV squads. Archer is assisted in coaching duties by Missy Billing and Monica Smith.

On Friday, the Lady Hawks took the court against Plevna, a team which was reportedly down two of their best players from the previous season. The Lady Hawks were able to easily handle Plevna in three sets with scores of 25-10, 25-4, and 25-8 to take their first win of the year.

Lauryn Billing led the Lady Hawks in assists with 14 sets against Plevna, while Zeason Schaffer had 10 aces in the match.

On Saturday, the Lady Hawks were up extra early for the long drive to Fairview, playing their first game at 10:30 in the morning against MonDak.

The Fairview tournament features pool play consisting of 2 set matches to 25 points, with the teams then split into two, four team brackets. The top four teams were placed into the championship bracket and the bottom four into a separate bracket. In the tournament brackets a best of three set arrangement was the order of the day.

Broadus won their first match against MonDak 2-0 with scores of 25-19 and 25-11, then split with Ekalaka, losing the first 23-25 and winning the second 25-7. Broadus then beat Richey Lambert with scores of 25-17 and 25-13.

Next up was Fairview in the tournament bracket, with Broadus taking 2 of 3 sets, 25-18, losing the second 24-26, and winning the third 15-10.

Broadus then found themselves in the tournament finals against a team they faced in the same spot last season – Jordan. Last season, the results were different, and Broadus was found wanting. This time around the Lady Hawks were able to seal the win in two sets, winning 25-21 and 26-24.

"Jordan hung on and were a tough team," Archer noted in a Monday interview.

He spoke of the tournament as a whole: "I thought we played really good volleyball when we played well...but we had moments when we had some difficulties, and that's something we'll have to work on going forward."

Archer noted that this was the first time Broadus has won the Fairview tournament; the team came home with t-shirts from the tournament to signify their win.

Broadus will need to work on overcoming those difficulties as they head to McCone County to play Circle this Friday, in a match which is sure to test the Lady Hawks' mettle.

The bus leaves Broadus at 10:30 AM on Friday for Circle, with the JH-B team playing at 3, JH-A at 4, JV at 5, and Varsity at 6:30.

From there, Broadus will play at Terry on Saturday, with the bus leaving at 2:00 PM. JH-B plays at 4:30, JH-A at 5:30, and Varsity at 6:30 PM.
