HELENA, Mont. (August 22, 2022) – The Montana Association of State Grazing Districts (MASGD) is seeking historic photos or documents from ranchers that tell the more than 80 year story of Montana grazing districts. MASGD has recently launched a preservation project after being awarded a grant from the Montana History Foundation (MHF) and the Montana Memory Project.
“Of all the western states, Montana alone has a statutory network of state grazing districts that allows for the greatest use of range forage while conserving our natural resources,” shared MASGD President Kevin Elias. “It is exciting to have this opportunity to preserve the rich history of our association and its grazing district members.”
Ideal items include photographs, handwritten meeting/ event minutes, notes, rosters, letters, or other items of historic significance to grazing district history. It is important to note, this project is in partnership with the Montana Memory Project (MMP) and items will be accessible to the public once the project is complete. The MMP is an online source for digital collections relating to Montana’s cultural heritage. The collection will be available at http://www.mtmemory.org.
If you are interested in contributing artifacts to the project, please contact Raylee Honeycutt at [email protected] or 406-442-3420. Be prepared to share a description of the items and the number of items. MASGD will need access to the items by September 15, 2022.
