Dry Conditions Cause Fires, Initiate Burn Ban

On Thursday, August 18th, Powder River County enacted a burn ban, shutting down any open burning within the county without the permission of the Fire Marshall. The ban was implemented as a result of the continued dry conditions, and will be in effect until lifted.

Last weekend two major fires occurred in Powder River County, including the Bay Fire on Bay Horse Creek which burned 797 acres, and was started by a burning coal seam. The Long Butte Fire, near the head of Bear Creek in SW Powder River Fire burned 1,572 acres; this was also reportedly a coal seam caused fire.

So far this summer fire activity in the area has been relatively light, with another coal seam caused fire on July 21st in southern Rosebud county burning nearly 2,000 acres south of Birney, and several small lightning caused fire in Southern PR County west of the Powder burning between 1 and 15 acres in late July.
