Life Skills Gained In Showmanship

By PR Extension Office

4-H livestock judge Kevin Murnin shared his philosophy of showmanship during the beef show at the Powder River County Fair.

"How you show up is important," he stated. "You will be selling these cattle this afternoon in an auction. How you present yourself and your livestock can make a tremendous difference, and it doesn't end with the auction. It is your responsibility to develop a relationship with the person who supports you at these Fairs. Personal contact is vital. Showmanship is a life skill and is as important as the market classes in my opinion," he concluded.

In addition to judging the showmanship classes for beef, he also judged the swine and sheep showmanship, market and breeding classes.

The top finishers in each division then competed in the Round Robin for the Overall Grand Champion Showmanship award.

For the second consecutive year, winner of the Senior Division was Rheanna Schroeder. Alivia Landa won Reserve Grand Champion. They received awards sponsored by the Powder River Farm Bureau, Tim and Gaylene Fortner and Broadus Feed & Supply – Anipro. In the junior division, Laney Williams won Grand Champion Round Robin exhibitor receiving awards sponsored by the Powder River Farm Bureau and Powder River Diesel. Ashton Madsen and Reece Emmons tied for Reserve Grand Champion Junior Round Robin showman, receiving awards sponsored by Jason & Hattie Arithson and the PRCF.

The Best Beginner Round Robin Showman Award sponsored by Bub, Carlene, Drew, Marni & Garrett Gaskill in memory of Amanda Gaskill goes to the top scoring first time participants in the Junior Division. This year's winner, Laney Williams, was one very excited young lady who had her eye on the buckle after qualifying for the Round Robin early in the week. Drew Gaskill presented Laney with the buckle at the conclusion of the awards ceremony. Amanda was a very enthusiastic and talented showman and the award continues to not only honor her memory, but inspires others to follow in her footsteps.

Participants in the Round Robin Showmanship contest included horse exhibitors Laney Williams and Colton Jones in the Junior Division; Zach Jones and Alivia Landa in the Senior Division. The Schroeder family were dual showmanship winners in both the beef and hog shows including Champion Senior Hog and Champion Senior Beef Showman Rheanna Schroeder; Reserve Champion Senior Hog and Beef Showman Jayce Schroeder; Champion Junior Hog and Beef Showman Danica Schroeder and Reserve Champion Beef and Hog showman Jordyn Schroeder.
