"Powder River County, these are your future 4-H and FFA members," said judge Kevin Murnin as he visited with each of the young exhibitors, learning the names of the 13 bums and their proud owners at the Powder River County Fair.
By far the most crowd-pleasing show, bums from throughout the county and beyond make it to town. This year, all bums were shown at the same time on Thursday afternoon prior to the sheep show.
"She bit me!" exclaimed Elena Ostendorf, as her hungry goat "Dena Norris" chomped down on a finger. Stoic, with tears rolling down her face, she made it through the show. Ring stewards Drew Gaskill and Heather Cunningham kept the species segregated and kept any unruliness in check. Teen clerk Lauryn Billing captured all the names...of both the contestants and their bums.
Exhibitors and bum calves included Emma Mills and "Lily"; Jaxon Mills and "Peaches"; Mesa Graff and "Snowflake" and Quincy Emmons and "Allears". Bum lambs included Hunter Kramme and "Rumwar", Mesa Gaskill and "Bunnysnake", Aubrey Brownfield and "Bucky", Layla Brownfield and "Annie", Krystin Kramme and "Staypuff". The goat kids included Rowdy Ryan and "Brownie", Elena Ostendorf and "Dena Norris" and Lincoln Ostendorf and "Chuck".
"These are all quality exhibits," said Murnin, "and each deserving of a blue ribbon."
