Broadus Third Glass Class Attends 29th Annual Conservation Field Day

On May 24th the third-grade class and their teacher, Mrs. Rogge, met a crew of presenters by the Little Powder Bridge on Talcott's Ranch to learn about conservation.

There were twelve stations for the kids to learn about conservation. The stations include viewing animal prints made by Gene Smith, Powder River Conservation Board (PRCD) member, and Diane Smith, then the students got to make their own hand or footprints.

Quinn Lively, Natural Re-sources Conservation Service (NRCS) Soil Scientist, taught the students all about the creatures who live in the soil and had worm races.

Mark Henning, NRCS Re-source Conservationist, talked about how tilling the soil disrupts the environment below the surface of the soil and how to keep soil healthy.

Martin Ellenburg, NRCS Area Biologist, had a great presentation about amphibians showcasing Bob and Rob the salamanders.

Corey Swenson, NRCS Range Management Specialist retired, educated the kids on the difference between grasses, forbs, and shrubs.

Kyle Queer and Kristi Cullinan, Fish, Wildlife, and Parks (FWP) wardens, showed different animal's furs and antlers. Shanna Talcott, District Conservationist NRCS, had a presentation about water quality using water from the Powder River, Little Powder River, Broadus water, and distilled water.

Jennie Olson, Olson Farm and Ranch, played a game with the students to learn about noxious weeds and how easily they spread.

Nate Reid, American Bird Conservancy (ABC), talked to students about the grassland birds and listened to bird calls. Wilson Renner, NRCS Soil Conservationist, showed some soil magic.

Nate Bumgardner, NRCS Prairie County Field Office, had a Ground Water Flow Presentation showing what happens if ground water is contaminated with harmful materials.

Kaci Anderson, NRCS Soil Conservation Terry office, had a presentation about pollinators and how important they are in our world. This field day is sponsored by the Powder River Conservation District and coordinated by Liz Riter.

Third grade students include Rickee Bilbrey, Skyler Burek, Mikayla Capp, Cole Draine, Maci Emmons, Clinton Handron, Faith Hopkins, Joelle Jurica, Hazel Kinzer, Avery Kramme, Dylan Krantz, Peyton Martinson, Kaylan Reaves, Gus Strackbein, and Daxson Wahl.
