Track Athletes Hurdle The Competition At Districts

The District Track Meet took place Monday in Baker, having been rescheduled from the original date of May 12th due to heavy rain. The storm also delayed the Broadus Elementary Track Meet, originally scheduled for Friday. That meet had an original make-up day of Monday, but with the delay in the District Meet, the Elementary Meet had to be rescheduled for Tuesday due to the necessity of Track Coach and Elementary PE Teacher Jerry Coulter managing the Elementary Meet. This chain of events eliminated our normal interview with Jerry on Monday regarding the track team, so we are only able to print the results this week without further insight from Jerry.

Broadus athletes performed well at the District Meet, with the Broadus boys team winning a second place trophy with 95 points; Melstone and their well populated track team took first with 169 points. The Broadus girls placed fourth overall with only three athletes, with 66 points. Melstone also took the top girls trophy, with 112 points, followed by Jordan with 110 and Plevna with 70.

Broadus individual athletes won a number of first place medals at the meet. The Hawk boys excelled in the medium and longer distance runs - Jaxon Bilbrey won the 400, Eli Heacock the 800 and the 1600, and Josh Rasmussen the 3200. Zeason Schaffer won the high jump and long jump, and Sophie Irish won the 3200.

The boys 4x400 meter relay team of Jaxon Bilbrey, Matt Hansen, Eli Heacock, and Josh Rasmussen also placed first.

With the top five athletes from each event moving on to the Southern BC Divisional this Friday in Laurel, Broadus will take a strong contingent of athletes, as shown by the placings in the results below. We will have a more in depth look at Districts next week, along with Divisional results.
