On Thursday, May 5th at Fairview members of the Broadus track team competed in their final regular season competition of the season, in anticipation of the District Meet this week in Baker. A total of seven athletes competed in the Thursday meet in Fairview, as others were engaged at State Music Festival or were absent due to sickness or other factors, according to Coach Jerry Coulter.
The seven members of the team who made the long journey to Fairview to compete in temperatures hovering around 80 degrees were rewarded with a meet featuring a number of smaller schools which Broadus could compete against.
The five Broadus boys were able to put up enough points to win fourth as a team at the meet, with 55 points. Plentywood won the boys competition with 112, followed by Richey-Lambert with 95 points and Culburtson with 73. Ten boys teams competed in total.
The two girl strong Broadus team of Sophie Irish and Maddie Zimmer won 11th place with 11 points, out of 14 total teams. Fairview scored 117 team points to take first overall in the girls.
Standout performances for Broadus included Jaxon Bilbrey, who placed 1st in the 400 meter dash. Jaxon leads the 4C conference in that event. Bilbrey also placed 2nd in the triple jump.
The 4x100 meter relay team, substituting Riggin Schaffer for Johnny Richards who was gone that day, placed 5th.
The hurdlers and long distance runners performed well, with Schaffer placing 4th in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles; Matt Hansen won 3rd third in the 110. Eli Heacock and Josh Rasmussen both placed in the 1600, with Rasmussen placing 2nd in the 3200.
For the girls, Maddie Zimmer had a good day, PRing in the high jump and placing 2nd, and also PRing in the 400. Sophie Irish placed 5th in the high jump and threw the javelin 65’.
The team will now travel to Baker for the District meet, where Coach Coulter expects the team to do well. Melstone has the edge on number of athletes and is likely to take the boys team trophy, but the Broadus boys are looking to compete for a team trophy if all goes well. The girls may have a tougher road to a trophy, with the four member team.
The top five athletes from each event will go on to the Divisional meet, on May 20th in Laurel – a track which the Broadus team has run on before and will help with familiarity. The top six finishers from Divisionals will move on to State.
Coulter noted that he still needs help from parents and other adults for the Elementary Track Meet, scheduled for this Friday. Help is needed raking, running a tape, or any of a number of other tasks it takes to operate a track meet. In the case of a weather delay, the event will be held Monday.
