Commissioner Candidate Q & A - Larry Clements

The following piece presents a series of answers to questions posed to the candidates running for the contested local positions in the June primary election. This week we have the candidates for the Commissioner position. The candidates were asked the following: Please provide us with your background, education, and some personal history. For those in incumbent positions we also asked: Please present an example or two of accomplishments from your current term in office. What are two goals you would like to accomplish if re-elected? For those challenging for a position we added: What qualities and skills would you bring to this position? What are two goals you would like to accomplish if elected? Would you be willing to sit in on the budget sessions this summer, in order to learn the process? Donna Giacometto is the incumbent candidate for Commissioner, with Lori Fortner, Floyd Huckins, and Larry Clements also vying for the seat. We present the answers with minimal editing from what the candidate originally delivered. Absentee ballots will be mailed on May 13th. A candidate forum, hosted by the Chamber of Commerce, is planned for Wednesday, May 25th in the high school auditorium. The primary election will take place June 7th.

My name is Larry Clements and I am a lifelong resident of Powder River County. Growing up my parents Earl & Vera Clements instilled ethics, morals and hard work, taught that your word is your bond, and to be the best person you can be. I was in 4-H growing up showing steers and horses. In high school I played football and wrestled. After graduation from Powder River County High School I got my CDL, driving truck for various trucking companies in Gillette, WY.

In 1975 I moved to the ranch to help the folks. I married Sonia Williams and we were blessed to have three children. All three children graduated from Powder River County High School. I worked for Harry Weeden for 4 years running a road grader and driving truck. In 1979 I bought my own road grader and owned it for 14 years, selling it in 1992 with 14,000 hours on it. In 2001 I acquired the family ranch. I have been ranching and I have a truck which I haul hay and equipment with. I am very blessed to live in Powder River County and have the opportunity to be on the family ranch. I am the third generation to own the ranch.

My qualities and skills include the ability to listen to people and talk to people with an open mind. I look to solve an issue without already having my mind made up before the discussion starts. I have experience running a road grader and heavy equipment and know what a road should look like and how to maintain it. I have worked with a budget my whole life.

Goals - To start with the salary is way out of line. I would like to see the position with no salary. The commissioners get paid mileage and a per diem when they show up to the meetings. I also believe there should be better communication with landowners.

Would you be willing to sit in on the budget sessions this summer, in order to learn the process?

Yes I would be willing to sit in on the budget sessions to learn the process if elected.
