A contentious school board meeting stuffed to the gills with agenda items on Monday night left us scrambling for additional details early Tuesday morning, as the brunt of a spring storm bore down on Broadus and the surrounding area.
On “normal” months, we have around 13 hours from conclusion of the school board meeting to confirm details, write up an article summarizing the meeting, and lay the article out on a page in anticipation of printing, while also allowing time for a modicum of sleep somewhere within that time period. That timeline is not normally an issue, but doesn’t leave a great deal of extra time for additional eventualities.
This week, with the school closure on Tuesday hampering our ability to confirm facts with the school administration, as well as our accelerated timeline due to the possibility of a power outage or other mishap which may have delayed printing, we made the executive decision to delay the article one week.
Our goal is to provide a balanced and accurate article about the meeting next week, unfortunately we’ll be missing out on the timely portion of the reporting.
In the meantime, a few major headlines to come out of the meeting include – hiring of coaches, teachers, and other staff – a trustee resignation – completion of a contract with the teacher’s union – purchase of a back-up generator – further discussion of bus contracts – and the adoption of a 2022-23 school calendar. One particularly timely note: a school board election will not be held for the three previous open positions on the board, as all three positions have either refiled or a replacement has been found.
