Broadus Varsity basketball teams brought home wins last weekend against Plevna and Terry. On Tuesday the teams traveled to Ekalaka, while the schedule is a bit light for the weekend ahead, with a Boys JV game at Northern Cheyenne as the only high school basketball on the schedule. Next week the teams travel to play Custer/Hysham on Thursday, February 3rd and host Jordan on Friday, February 4th.
Girls
With several players on the Broadus girls basketball players sidelined due to injuries, bench players had to step up their game over the weekend as Broadus faced off against Plevna and Terry, and Broadus was able to pull away wins against both teams.
Prior to the weekend games Abi Krantz went out with a knee injury that is expected to put her out for the rest of the regular season, while Mia Mader was recovering from an ankle injury. Oliveah Schaffer played limited minutes over the weekend due to an injury, and Emma Isaacs suffered a sprained ankle against Plevna which limited her playing time.
"Our younger girls came in and helped out tremendously," Broadus Head Coach Ashley Emmons said of the wins.
On Friday against Plevna, Broadus managed 10 steals and converted 27 turnovers into points in the 45-17 win. Plevna was able to keep the score tied for much of the 1st quarter before Broadus pulled ahead 21-11 at the half and 39-17 after three quarters.
Zeason Schaffer led the Lady Hawks in scoring with 14, along with 8 rebounds, while Kendal Stanley had a great night with 12 points.
On Saturday against Terry, the full effects of an injured team were realized in the first half as Emmons used different rotations than usual to keep her ambulatory players from further damaging themselves. Despite Terry's winless season thus far, the Lady Terriers were able to put up a fight in the first half, leading at several points.
In the second half Terry found themselves in foul trouble, and Broadus came out to an early lead in the third quarter scoring 16 points in the third to Terry's 4. Broadus scored 15 to 7 in the fourth quarter to win the game 44-24.
Zeason Schaffer once again had a big night of scoring, sinking 18 points, or 41% of the Lady Hawks' points. Zeason also had 5 steals on the night, while the Lady Hawks as a whole had 23 steals, with 25 points coming off turnovers.
The next games for the Lady Hawks come against Custer/Hysham and Jordan next week. In their previous meetings, Broadus beat Custer/Hysham 36-32 at home, and lost 27-39 at Jordan.
The break comes at an opportune time for the Lady Hawks as the team has some time to recover from their injuries as tournament time draws near.
The Lady Hawks JV won their last two games 26-7 against Wibaux, and 22-5 against Custer/Hysham, showing the up and coming stars of the Lady Hawks are indeed a talented group of athletes.
Boys
The Hawk Varsity boys are thus far undefeated, keeping their record intact over the weekend against Plevna and Terry.
On Friday, Broadus stars Dillon Gee and Marcus Mader sat out against Plevna, who were 0-6 going into the weekend.
Even without two of their top players Broadus was able to cruise to an easy win 69-25, with the Hawks leading in nearly every offensive category save 3 point percentage, where Plevna sunk 2 of 7 for 28.6% to the Hawks' 3 of 17 for 17.6%, and offensive rebounds, with Plevna snagging 8 compared to the Hawks 7.
Tytan Hanson led the Hawks in scoring, sinking 7 of 10 field goals for 18 points. Wyatt Gee went 7 of 9 for 17 points, and Jaxon Bilbrey scored on all four of his shots from the field while going 3 of 3 from the free throw line for 11 points total.
On Saturday Broadus limited the strong offense of Terry's foreign exchange team to pull away with another win. Terry kept the score relatively close through the first half, but just as Broadus Head Coach Mike Richards told us last week, the Terriers were no match for Broadus' height and strength as the Hawks cruised to a 60-39 win.
Broadus scored .91 points per possession in the win and spent a good portion of the game taking advantage of the not yet applied shot clock (the shot clock will be in play next season) to whittle down the clock by passing the ball to and fro.
Dillon Gee had a big night offensively, scoring 23 points, while Marcus Mader had 12 points and 6 assists, and Tytan Hanson had 12 points and 2 blocked shots.
Next week against Custer/Hysham and Jordan Broadus will face teams that they have previously beaten 49-39 and 61-45, respectively.
The Hawk boys JV team continues to roll with a 9-0 record thus far in the season. The Hawk JV beat Wibaux 58-17 and Custer/Hysham 34-20 in a half-game of play. This week the Hawk JV will be the only Broadus team to play at Busby. Since Busby did not play a varsity season last year they are limited to a JV season for this year.
