Broadus Basketball Teams Go 4-0 In Weekend Action

The Lady Hawks played a great weekend of basketball, beating Wibaux on the road and Custer/Hysham at home on Saturday, while the Hawk boys Varsity squad continued their win streak, now sitting 10-0 on the season.

Broadus Coach Ashley Emmons knew they'd have to contain Wibaux's top scorers in order to capture a win last Friday in Wibaux County, along with ensuring their offense kept the Lady Longhorns on their toes. In a game where the lead see-sawed back and forth throughout the entire game with eight lead changes in total, the Lady Hawks were ultimately able to pull out a win in overtime, 41-39.

Abi Krantz led the Lady Hawks in scoring with 18 points, while Emma Isaacs had 9 points. Zeason Schaffer, who scored 7, was injured in a last second long range shot in the fourth quarter to attempt a win.

Going into the Custer/ Hysham game, Broadus had two players out – Oliveah Schaffer and Mia Mader, and Zeason Schaffer was ambulatory but pulled out early in the game. Despite the loss of some of their starting five, Emmons told us the entire host of players off the bench showed great determination against Custer/ Hysham. Broadus would win the game 36-32, giving the Lady Hawks a 4-3 conference record, and placing them fourth in the conference.

Boys

The Hawk boys soared into Wibaux on Friday and handily beat the Wibaux Longhorns 63-19.

"I'm pleased with how we played against Wibaux on Friday. Sometimes when facing a team for the second time in the season after beating them the first time it's easy to get passive, and the boys didn't do that." Stats from the game were not available on Hudl at press time, due to issues with the video upload.

Richards knew from watching game film on Custer/ Hysham that they are a strong up and coming team with solid fundamentals, and the Rebels showed their grit on Saturday, even leading against Broadus at one point in the third quarter. The Hawks were able to prevail, pulling ahead in the fourth quarter by as many as 13 points to seal the win, 49-39.

Johnny Richards and Wyatt Gee both led the Hawks in scoring with 13 points a piece.

Upcoming games include Broadus hosting Plevna this Friday, and Broadus hosting Terry on Saturday. In a change from previous schedules, Broadus will no longer host Northern Cheyenne for JV games, but will instead have Broadus Elementary games beginning at 2:45 and lasting until the Varsity games begin at 5:30. Northern Cheyenne is currently under COVID closures, prompting the change in schedule, according to Richards.

On Saturday a ½ JV Girls game will be played against Terry.

Plevna currently sits 0-5 in conference play, but Terry is third in the conference at 5-2, led by high scoring exchange students Rodrigo Takano and Victor Delgado. Richards plans on the Hawks' height advantage to be a key against Terry, as well as shutting down the exchange students as much as possible.
