Wrestling Team Competes At Glasgow

With a team somewhat short in numbers due to illness of the non-COVID variety, Broadus Head Coach Frankie Schoonover took his team to Glasgow late last week to compete at the 26th Annual Scottie Invitational, with the moniker of Glasgow’s mascot, the Scottish Terrier.

Broadus dualed against several teams including Billings Central’s JV, Fairfield, and Huntley Project on Friday, coming close to a win against Fairfield but ultimately falling to the other teams in the duals.

“Glasgow was a tough tournament,” Schoonover said of the two day event. “We came out flat and lost a lot of early matches, and that hurt us in the long run.”

Indeed, a number of the first round matches in the tournament ended with Broadus losses, with Hawk wrestlers coming back to win subsequent matches.

Overall, Broadus had two competitors place at the event: Isaiah Mcmullan at 103 lbs, placed 6th, and Dakota Holbrook at 182 lbs., placed 4th.

Schoonover spoke of the Broadus competitors: “Isaiah McMullan (who finished 1-3) had some very close matches; he now sees what he needs to win at the high school level. Raiden Aurand (0-2) has been working on his diet and making weight, and I think that occupied his mind last week instead of working on his wrestling, so that’s something we will be concentrating on going forward. Kail Irish (2-2) didn’t make the 126 lb weight class so we bumped him up to 132. He was giving up strength to these bigger kids, but he’s working on relaxing on the mat and wrestling. Seth McDowell (1-2) had a great match against Dillon Hughes of Glasgow. He picked that kid apart and got the pin; it was great to watch. Riggin Schaffer (2-2) does a great job of looking forward and not dwelling on past matches. We saw that this weekend when he lost to a kid from Fairfield in the dual, then came back to beat him in the tournament. Kolton Williams (0-2) had a great tournament. He is extremely coachable and takes what we as coaches say to heart. He started out the tournament with a deer in the headlights look, but after using our suggestions he got his first win ever, and that’s great to see. Dakota Holbrook (2-2) is one of our leaders, and after placing at State he knows where he needs to be. He faced off against his old nemesis in Glasgow – Tyler Schoen of Chinook, who Dakota has lost to in the past. That same fate happened this time around, but it’s a matter of time before Dakota has his number. Cale Emmons (0-2), wrestling at 205, is in a tough weight class. There’s some big boys who cut weight to make 205, but Cale is young and he’s learning. Josiah Middle Rider (1-2) is coming off a season where he didn’t wrestle, and this weekend I think he figured out where he needs to be and won his first match of the year.”

“Overall I think we are well conditioned but we need to work on our mental preparation, so when we hit the mat we are aggressive and ready to win,” Schoonover continued. “That mental preparation is what we’re going to concentrate on this week.”

The Broadus wrestlers will travel to Huntley Project for a dual this weekend, followed by a mixer in Colstrip on Tuesday, before taking some time off for Christmas.
