Basketball Teams Play In Jordan

The Broadus basketball teams started conference play last Saturday in Jordan, facing Garfield County's Mustang teams.

The Broadus Girls Varsity team came out of the gates with the lead, and kept the score within one point into the second quarter, when Jordan started to pull away.

"We played well defensively in the first half, but offensively we missed some shots that we really should've made," Broadus Head Coach Ashley Emmons commented on the first half, which finished up with Broadus down 11-21.

In the second half, Broadus was able to gain some offensive momentum, scoring 12 points in the third quarter...but their solid defense from the first half did not hold, as Jordan put up 13 points to maintain their lead.

With a final score of 39-27, Jordan handed Broadus their first conference loss of the season. The Lady Hawks had a field goal percentage of 21% at Jordan, sinking 9 of 43 shots.

Emma Isaacs and Zeason Schaffer both led the Lady Hawk scoring drive with six points a piece, while Issacs also had four rebounds; Zeason Schaffer had five.

Emmons will now look to rectify the Lady Hawks' scoring issues in the coming week of practice as they prepare for the next week of games. The team travels to Plevna on Friday before hosting their first home game of the year, this Saturday against Wibaux.

In a change from the previously printed schedules, the Girls JV against Wibaux will only be half a game due to a lack of Girls JV players in Wibaux, meaning the Boys JV will begin at 1:30, with Girls JV slated for 3, Boys Varsity at 4, and Girls Varsity at 5.

Emmons tells us that Plevna has a talented guard that Broadus will look to shut down, and Wibaux has one of the coolest headed guards in the conference. If Broadus plays to their potential on defense, and the girls sink their shots on offense the games should be quite competitive. Plevna has not yet played a game, while Wibaux is currently 0-1, losing to Richey-Lambert in non-conference action last Friday, 35-54.

Next Tuesday the Lady Hawks host St. Labre for a non-conference game. St. Labre did not have a winter sports season last year due to COVID, so little is known about how talented they may be this season until they're on the court.

The JV Girls team won 28-27 against the Jordan JV Girls team.

Boys

The Broadus Boys Varsity team continued their winning streak at Jordan, as they rode the Mustangs hard and put them away wet with a final score of 61-45.

Broadus opened up the game with an early lead, scoring 17 in the first quarter to Jordan's 4 points. The Hawks kept the Mustangs to 13 points in the first half, a feat which Broadus Head Coach Mike Richards commented "I'll take that any day."

In the second half, Jordan was able to score on Broadus, particularly in the 4th quarter, perhaps as a result of the Hawks younger players finding more time on the court towards the end of the game. Nevertheless, Broadus came home with a double digit win, averaging 1.02 points per possession – in general if a team averages over a point per possession that's a good stat to see.

"We did a great job moving the ball, and getting the ball inside," Richards commented. Indeed, 24 of 45 two point shots for the Hawks were scored from within the paint, while the Hawks 3 point shooting game was fairly cold on the evening, with the team only sinking 2 of 12 from beyond the arc.

Dillon Gee had a good night at Jordan, sinking 11/16 shots for 69% shooting, and adding 17 rebounds on the night.

Marcus Mader's four assists and zero turnovers were a key component of the Hawk's win, while Richards told us that Tytan Hanson had a number of precise passes that didn't show up on the stats sheet but helped the Hawks tremendously. Wyatt Gee, who missed much of last season with an ankle injury helped the Hawks with 10 points and 8 rebounds.

The 3-0 Hawks hope to bulldoze their way through the weekend against Plevna (currently 0-0) and Wibaux (0-1) before facing Class B St. Labre on Tuesday.

After the coming week of games, the teams will have some time off over the Christmas break to prepare for a long stretch of games coming up in January.

In JV Boys action last week at Jordan, Broadus won handily, 44-16.
