By Broadus Schools Superintendent Jim Hansen
A couple months ago I gave a short presentation to trustees discussing the importance of recognizing we are in the “service” profession. Therefore, I thought it would be an appropriate time to discuss the importance of community service to both your school and community. Our school and community are very fortunate to offer a wide array of services. A number of these services are run with strictly volunteers or with very minimal financial compensation. As our population decreases so does the number of individuals willing to donate time to our ever-growing needs. I have always respected the dedication of our school board members, advisors, coaches, chaperones, ticket takers, after graduation workers, and others who volunteer their time for our youth. Frequently when one volunteers they receive advice on how things should be done. I would compare many of these voluntary positions to a sports official who receives unlimited advice, but few aspire to stand in their shoes. During this time of political and social unrest, most of us find it much easier to complain rather than giving of themselves to improve the situation. Many of the services your school district provides are done so with community and staff assistance, who receive little or no financial compensation.
During this season of giving, I would encourage each of us evaluate our own community service. On behalf of Broadus Public Schools, I would like to thank you for your support and wish all of you a Merry Christmas.
