The Broadus boys varsity basketball team won their first two games of the season, last weekend at the Shamrock Classic tournament at Sacred Heart in Miles City.
Broadus boys Head Coach Mike Richards was a key component of returning the tourney to Sacred Heart – for a long period of time up through the 80s, Sacred Heart hosted an early season basketball tournament for surrounding teams, but Mike told us that sometime around when Sacred Heart shut down its high school, so went the tournament. Richards helped hatch the idea of a tournament, and officials at Sacred Heart were on board. Judging by the good attendance at the games this weekend, the tournament will hopefully continue in the future, per Richards. This tournament makes for a much more accessible early season commute for Broadus fans than in years past, when the team attended a tournament in Lewistown.
Boys
The Hawks got off to a slow start against Savage on Friday, going down 0-4 in the first minutes of the game, before roaring back to take the lead, which they maintained throughout the rest of the game. Broadus won the game handily, 53-21.
"The game against Savage was a normal first game," Mike commented, speaking of the slow start. "I was disappointed in our free throw shooting percentage. We try to hit 70% of our free throws, and against Savage we only hit 60%, and 50% against Circle. That's something we'll have to work on going forward."
The team seemed to have "gained their sea legs" in the second game of the season against Circle on Saturday, as the Hawks steamrolled the Wildcats 71-43, led in scoring by Dillon Gee with 19 points, Tytan Hanson with 18 points, and Marcus Mader with 13.
"Overall I think we had a good weekend. We were able to get playing time for all of our players each night, and it's nice to get the season going with a 2-0 start," Richards commented.
This Friday, the Broadus teams will travel to Jordan, for their only games of the weekend. The JV games originally scheduled against Jordan at home on Saturday have been cancelled.
In JV action at Miles City, the Hawks won against Savage 35-25, and beat Ekalaka 69-27.
Girls
The Lady Hawks began their season on Friday facing Savage. Broadus kept the lead through much of the game, going up by as many as 8 points in the second quarter. In the second half, Savage was able to adjust and come back to take the lead in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter, beating Broadus by 1 point, 38-37.
On Saturday, the Lady Hawks played against Circle, falling behind early to lose 44-31.
Broadus girls Head Coach Ashley Emmons spoke of the games during a Monday interview: "Those games were tough, but it's good to see what we need to work on. We really need to work on protecting the ball. We also need to work on consistency throughout the entire team."
Despite the scores against Circle being lower than the close loss to Savage, Emmons said that she saw improvements from the first game, especially when it came to adjusting the offense in the second quarter to shut down one of Circle's scorers.
Abi Krantz led Broadus in scoring against Savage with 13 points.
Mia Mader led the Lady Hawks in scoring against Circle, with nine points, while Emma Isaacs and Zeason Schaffer each downed eight a piece.
This Friday the Lady Hawks will take on Jordan, an aggressive and scrappy team which will test the Lady Hawks ball protection skills, according to Emmons.
The girls JV split their games at Sacred Heart, Winning 38-36 to Ekalaka, and falling 31-15 to Circle.
