MSU Powder River Extension Agents Julie Riley and Mary Rumph initiated a friendly local competition for "Can the Griz" with County Attorney and UM Grizzly alumni and fan Jeff Nobel with the local Powder River Food Bank winning as the recipient of 235 pounds of food and $1,350 from generous donations from our community members for local families.
"Though we had to concede the "Brawl of the Wild" Cat/Griz game on the turf on Saturday, we are excited to claim a local victory!" exclaimed Julie Riley.
The competition resulted in the Bobcats collecting 195 pounds and $1350. Dollars convert to pounds for a total of 1,545 pounds for the Bobcats. The Grizzly box topped out at 40 pounds.
"Just a little competition between the two offices located across the hall in the Powder River County Courthouse resulted in an amazing donation that will assist local families," said Riley. "We appreciate Nobel's willingness to participate, noting that he commented early on, that he recognized he was in "Cat Country"."
Campus towns of Bozeman and Missoula take the annual contest seriously and this year MSU and the Bozeman community generated 204,469 pounds of food and $449,657. Pounds and dollars are added together for the contest, resulting in a total of 654,126 pounds for the Bozeman community. The Can the Cats food drive in Missoula brought in the equivalent of 583,009 pounds of food for the Missoula Food Bank.
"It is worth noting that Bozeman and the MSU community have won the competition 18 out of the 22 years it has been held," concluded Riley.
