Hawk Football Falls To Ekalaka In Final Game of Season

The Broadus Hawks football team played a cross-conference game against Ekalaka on Saturday, with the Bulldogs coming out on top, 56-26. The conditions were pleasant for the game, though the field was a bit wet at game time following the mid-week snowstorm, after which the field had been cleared.

Ekalaka led off the game with a QB keeper for a touchdown, and Broadus failed to match the Bulldog's intensity as Ekalaka kept the lead throughout the game while the Hawk offense faltered. A combination of turnovers and big plays called back for holding and blocks in the back cost the Hawks on offense, and frustrations grew until a series of unnecessary roughness penalties led to the ejection of Hawk Captains Dakota Holbrook and Corbin Irish. Broadus Head Coach Ross Randall was also ejected after voicing his frustrations as what he saw was one-sided calling against Broadus on many of the penalties. Ekalaka's quarterback was also ejected late in the game.

Bright spots for the Hawks included Corbin Irish's sacks on the opposing QB in two straight plays during the first quarter, and a last second dive into the end zone by Cooper Zimmer for a touchdown as the siren sounded at the end of the first half. Johnny Richards, a senior, caught a long pass in the final minutes of the game and ran in for a touchdown. After crossing the goal line, Richards started to spike the ball in the end-zone, but hesitated...then went ahead and did it anyway. Though the move was illegal and resulted in a Broadus penalty, one can hardly blame Richards for taking advantage of the situation – down by an insurmountable score, in his last game wearing the hawk football uniform, in front of a home crowd, he made the most of the experience. The crowd went wild.

The Hawks finish the season with a 3-5 overall record, beating Lodge Grass, Poplar, and Forsyth. The final standings from the Eastern 8 man have Fairview at the top of the heap; they will go on to host Chinook in the playoffs. Second is Culbertson, who will play Belt this weekend in the playoffs, followed by Scobey, who will play at Simms. Plentywood and Circle have a game this week to determine who will be seeded 4th and 5th, with the winner playing at Fort Benton, and the loser playing the #1 seed from the western division.

Broadus Head Coach Ross Randall wanted to thank the seniors for all their years of hard work and dedication to the program, as well as the parents and his coaching staff, noting the Hawk success took a team effort by everyone involved.
