Comments Sought On Proposed Widening Project for MT Highway 59 South of Miles City

Miles City — The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) would like to announce and invite the public to comment on a proposal to widen about 2.5 miles of MT Highway 59, south of Miles City. The project begins at reference post 25.5 (Ed: approximately two miles south of the turn-off for the Powderville Road) and extends south for 2.3 miles ending near reference post 27.8.

Proposed work includes widening the existing roadway shoulders to at least 4-ft., flattening roadside slopes, rumble strips and a chip seal, pavement markings, and upgraded signage and delineation. The purpose of the project is to address an existing run-off-the-road crash trend on this segment of road.

Construction is tentatively planned for 2024 depending on completion of design and availability of funds. New right-of-way and relocation of utilities will be required. MDT staff will contact landowners prior to construction regarding property acquisition and temporary construction permits.
