Broadus Hawk Football traveled to Circle last Saturday, playing Circle at their homecoming.
"It was a physical game," Broadus Head Coach Ross Randall commented on the Hawk performance. The grinding, tough game featured a number of penalties, as well as several illegal chop blocks which went uncalled, according to sources at the game and video footage; these no calls led to Randall becoming extremely aggravated and ultimately being ejected from the game.
Broadus led 8-0 after the first quarter after a four yard run by Johnny Richards, but Circle was able to answer in the second quarter, scoring three touchdowns to lead 22-8 at the half.
With Broadus Assistant Coach Cass Zimmer calling the plays, a special pass play was called up in the second half, for a 35 yard completion for Wyatt Gee to Paysen Kuhbacher for the score.
Broadus would finish the game down 14-30 for the loss, placing the Hawks with an 0-2 conference record, and 1-3 overall record.
Both Randall and Zimmer agreed that penalties were one of the major deciding factors in the Hawks' loss at Circle, with the team racking up nine penalties for 65 yards, the majority of those coming at crucial times – drive stoppers.
"The Head Coach doesn't get enough credit," Zimmer commented. "Making those decisions is tough work, and I have a lot of respect for what Ross does every game now that I've done it firsthand." Due to the ejection at Circle, Randall will have to sit out from coaching this weekend, as Broadus hosts Poplar, this Friday at 7 pm for Homecoming. Poplar currently sits 0-2 in conference, and 0-4 overall, coming off a 41-6 loss to Mon-Dak last weekend.
Broadus had a total of 158 yards against Circle, 56 on the ground and 102 through the air. Wyatt Gee went 8 of 16 on passing, averaging 12.8 yards per completion, and throwing for one touchdown and no interceptions. Gee also had a blocked punt on the defensive side of the ball. Broadus and Circle both had troubles with fumbles; Broadus lost 2 of 3, and Circle had three fumble turnovers.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Hawks swarmed to the ball very well, with five Hawks combining for at least five tackle assists. Corbin Irish led in tackling, with six solo tackles and 11 assists, while Paysen Kuhbacher had five solo tackles and 11 assists.
The Broadus JH and JV will take on Forsyth, next Monday at home.
