Art & Soul Show Draws Hundreds

By Lana Smith

The Broadus fairgrounds were a busy place over the Labor Day weekend. It was not only the setting for the horse sale and all its accompanying events, but was the new location for Art & Soul's annual Art Show & Sale.

This year's show was titled "Art Stampede." There were many types of art represented, including acrylic painting, pastel painting, watercolor painting, scratchboard, bead artistry, gourd art, leather art, pencil/ charcoal drawings, oil painting, acrylic pours, alcohol ink, collage, silver and copper jewelry and metal art. Many of the artists also offered reproductions of their work on cards, pillows, blankets, bags, bookmarks, etc.

The local artisan society's event started off with a lovely opening for the public on Friday evening. All were invited to view the art, visit with the artists, and enjoy wine and charcuterie provided by the society. The show was open all day Saturday and Sunday, with around 275 people attending over the three days, with many purchasing art or other items offered by the 13 local artists.

The popular children's Art Contest was held in conjunction with the show/sale and was judged on Saturday. The theme was "Art on the Range". Winner's were: Grades 4-6: Sammie Hart 1st and Given Hopkins 2nd. Grades 1-3: Faith Hopkins 1st and Mikayla Capp 2nd. The four winners were awarded cash prizes donated by Shilo and Karen Capp and Ward Gatlin Construction.

A very appreciative Twin Klar was the lucky winner of the big drawing for the collection of art valued at over $3000, held at the end of the show on Sunday afternoon. The artists who donated to the drawing were: Laura Lee Ullrich/original beaded necklace with precious stones, Ronda Gatlin/original matted pastel painting, Bailey Sparks/original framed leather collage, Jan Stevens/framed original alcohol ink painting, Garrett and Katie Harrington/ handmade ornate silver and copper bit, Sonja Harrington, original oil painting, Alan and Dana Jimmerson/matted print of an original graphite drawing, Kate Ruland/framed original watercolor painting, Lana Smith, matted original watercolor painting and framed digital art, Karen Wooding/original decorative gourds, Blondie Woolston/ decorative gourd ornaments and Ann Emmons/framed original acrylic pour painting.
