The Lady Hawk Varsity Volleyball team played at Plevna on Saturday. Plevna has only had a volleyball team for a few years, but Broadus Head Volleyball Coach Gordon Archer told us Plevna has improved over last season, which is great to see a program improving and becoming more competitive. Archer was able to play a number of his younger players against Plevna, in order to gain experience at the varsity level, and to reward them for their hard work in practice.
Archer said he could see the freshman players gaining confidence as the match went along, as Broadus beat Plevna in three straight sets, 25-9, 25-13, and 25-11. Gordon commented that this was the first match in his memory where Broadus had a 100% pass rate, though he also mused that all of those passes did not go exactly where they were intended. Nonetheless, the 100% pass rate was a nice piece of work by the Lady Hawk athletes.
Broadus now sits at 1-1 in conference play, having lost their first conference match against Jordan in a nail-biter that came down to the fifth set, in the opening week of the season. Circle currently leads the Eastern 2-C conference with a 2-0 record.
The Lady Hawks will travel to Wibaux this Friday to play the Lady Longhorns in a conference match. Wibaux currently sits at 0-2 in conference play, having lost to Terry in four sets, and Ekalaka in five sets.
On Saturday, the Lady Hawks will host a series of home matches against Plevna and Savage, with the Plevna match counting as a conference match for both teams; the Savage match will be non-conference. Sacred Heart will also be on hand for a junior high match. Action begins at 11 AM, at the BHS gym.
