The Lady Hawk Cross Country team headed west last Friday to compete in the Hardin Invitational Cross Country Run, held outside of Crow Agency. The course features the notoriously tough Gas Cap Hill, featuring a steep section which leaves runners winded, before a long downhill where they are able to make up time, in a strong contrast to many CC courses, such as the race last week in Billings that was run on a perfectly flat course. Broadus Cross Country Coach Ashley Emmons told us that Gas Cap Hill serves as a good test for the runners in terms of pacing – expending too much energy early in the race leaves them worn out for the climb, or going to slow at the beginning to save energy for the climb, and being left behind by the other runners.
The three Broadus runners performed well, with JV runner Rebecca Rasmussen, a freshman running in her second race, crossing the finish line in 27:11.15 for 16th place out of 51 runners, and taking 3.5 minutes off her time from last week in Billings.
Varsity runner Rachel Rasmussen, a senior, finished in 23:05.49 for 9th place and a medal, while Mercy Brost, a junior, finished in 31:08.03, in her first ever Cross Country race, for 63rd place. Both runners qualified for State.
This Thursday the team competes in Belle Fourche, while on Tuesday, September 14th the team will compete at home in the Broadus Meet, at Rolling Hills Golf Course. Emmons told us she is looking for volunteers to help administer the race, and to please contact her or Mike Richards if interested.
