Wagon is bogged; dancers rescued

While fording Powder River last Saturday night, a wagonload of young people from Pumpkin Creek became bogged in the quicksand when in midstream. The river’s channel was only about 75 yards across and was shallow with the running head only about a foot deep, so that the 14 occupants of the wagon were rescued without difficulty, cowboys coming to their aid with saddle horses. The wagon was temporarily deserted when the team was unhitched and the next morning it was found securely embedded deep in the sand that had washed against it.

The young folks had driven about 25 miles from Pumpkin Creek to attend the dance and program at the Oscar P. Broaddus School House, given jointly by that school and the Baking Powder Creek School. To reach their destination just beyond they had to negotiate the river. The moon and stars were obscured by clouds and darkness prevailed. Walter Mitchell was driving, and in some manner missed the main crossing below Billy Broaddus’ and instead sought a crossing above the bridge and below Henry Daily’s. The team was rather fagged from a hard journey and failed to respond once the wheels settled into the sand. Clarence Ketthman volunteered to unhitch the horses and go for assistance. He spoiled his dancing togs by getting wet to the knees but it was long before he brought relief. Other occupants of the wagon were Fred Mitchell and small sister, Dewey Palmer, Chas. Mitchell, George Bottles, Angie and Marie Carney. Additional names were not available.

The program and dance was an unqualified success, and nearly 100 people attended, crowding the auditorium to its capacity.

Among the interesting numbers on the program were a song, “June,” by Beulah Crays; song, “Sparkling Eyes,” by Jack Rice; “Aunt Prue,” by Elizabeth Broaddus and Reva Pierce; song, “Lovers’ Quarrel,” by Elizabeth Broaddus and Jack Rice.

The dance immediately followed the program with music dispensed by Frank L. Allison and Frank Rice.

After partaking of a sumptuous midnight supper with more than sufficient “eats” for all, the dancing was resumed and continued until 4 o’clock in the morning. It goes beyond saying that everyone had the best time ever.
