A number of athletes on the Broadus Track team are now district champions, following their first place individual performances last week at the district tournament, which was held last Thursday in Baker.
For the boys, the team's freshmen helped propel the 1600 meter relay team to a first place win and team record time of 4:00.87, with three of the four members of the team set to finish their first year of high school next week including Matt Hansen, Jaxon Bilbrey, and Eli Heacock, along with senior Kyle Minow. Minow achieved his own first place win in the Javelin with a personal record throw of 140' 9". Jaxon Bilbrey raced to first in the 400 meter with a personal record time of 55.56, while Eli Heacock won first in the 800 with a 2:20.81. Tytan Hanson placed first in the Discus with a 110' 7" throw, and Brandon Rogers won the 3200 with a time of 12:15.62.
Broadus boys placed well in a number of other events, pushing their team total to 145, and winning them a second place plaque. Melstone's 161 points brought them first as a team, while Broadus was able to nearly double up on points compared to third place Ekalaka.
The girls team, while short in numbers compared to the boys, nevertheless performed exceptionally well at the district meet, winning 80 points for 3rd place, and only missing second to Jordan by one point.
The lone girl to win first was Freshman Zeason Schaffer, who placed first in the Long Jump and Triple Jump events, qualifying for state in the latter event with a 34'3" mark.
Taylor Hanson placed second in the Discus and Shot Put and Rachel Rasmussen second in the 3200 to help increase the team's score.
"I'm proud of the entire team," Broadus Head Coach Jerry Coulter said of their performance during an interview on Monday. "The weather in Baker was beautiful, and you couldn't ask for a better day." Best of all, no Broadus athletes were injured.
With positions one through five qualifying to move on to the divisional meet this Thursday in Laurel, Broadus will have a strong contingent of athletes on hand to take on the divisional teams. Coulter said that the teams from the 6C are very fast and will make for a very competitive tournament, which the Hawks will have to overcome if they plan to continue on to State. Zeason Schaffer is the only Hawk pre-qualified for state, in the Triple-Jump.
State takes place May 28th and 29th in Missoula.
Coulter also mentioned the great weather at the Elementary Track Meet, held last Friday in Broadus. The weather was sunny and warm for the meet, with the cool evenings up to that point keeping the bugs at a minimum. Coulter wanted to thank the parents who helped out to make the meet a success: "I really appreciate the parents who helped out, whether they ran a measuring tape or a rake, they made the meet an enjoyable time for the kids." Results from the Elementary Meet will be printed as space allows.
