Arbor Day celebrated at Broadus Elementary

By Mayor M. Lyman Amsden

After a brief presentation about Arbor Day by Tree Board members and a lively quiz about trees, the students shared poetry about trees. Mrs. Emmons' first graders read the poem "Growth of a Tree" in unison.

They also created tree artwork which will be displayed in the window of the International Organic Inspectors Association downtown. The first grade reading was followed by the reading of a poem by at least one student selected in each class --Rickee Bilbrey (2nd grade); Carter D'Amico and Courtney Kuhbacher (3rd grade); Sammy Threefingers-Hart (4th grade), and Kassie Hagedorn (6th grade).

The morning was spent planting trees at Cliff Park (next to the clinic) along the walking trail. Don Birkholz, Tree Board member, dug the holes and helped the students plant the trees with compost and water. Seven trees were planted, with each class planting a different tree and naming it. Trees included lanceolate cottonwood, flowering plum, crabapple, Canadian red chokecherry, Hot Wings Tartarian maple, American linden, and Wichita blue juniper.

The celebration ended with tree cookies and wood pencils for everyone. Tree Board members who helped with the celebration were Don, Kathy Roberts, Kelda Page, and Margaret Scoles. Rain came the following day - a perfect end to the celebration. The Arbor Day celebration was delayed for a week because there was no school on the last Friday of April, which is the official date each year. Funds for the tree purchase and celebration were provided by grant funds from the DNRC. The Town of Broadus has been a Tree City USA since 1999, maintaining recertification each year, and is therefore eligible each year to apply for a $750 grant to use for the celebration.

4th Grade Arbor Day Poem

Growing Trees

Falling Trees

Growing trees, growing trees

Oak, Pine, Birch, Elm, Cedar, Evergreen

Growing trees, growing trees

Trees are growing, growing, growing

Roots reach low as branches reach high

Trees are growing, growing, growing

New trees are growing, growing, growing

Seeds are falling and seedlings are growing

New trees are growing, growing, growing

Growing seedlings, growing seedlings

Growing through the seasons and getting bark

Growing seedlings, growing seedlings

Falling trees, falling trees

The tree has been made into The New York Times

Falling trees, falling trees

By Sammie Threefingers-Hart

Trees

By Kassie L Hagedorn

6th grade

Tall, majestic wood

Watching over the vast forest

Standing tall always

Green beautiful leaves

Household of animal kin

Rough bark to protect

Reaching the blue sky

Limbs holding it all up

Forever strong
