Broadus Tracksters compete at Laurel, Baker

Due to the recent cold and wet conditions, the track team hasn't been able to practice on the home track in two weeks, and the adversity continued as the team braved the winterlike conditions last week at a meet in Laurel. As conditions improved they traveled to Baker on Saturday for a meet in more pleasant weather.

On Tuesday, April 13th, the Laurel Meet took place, with ten teams in attendance such as Columbus and Roundup. Broadus Head Coach Jerry Coulter told us that Laurel fielded a huge team, and he estimated around 200 athletes competed at the meet.

Despite temperature hovering around 38 degrees during the meet, Broadus athletes performed quite well, with Eli Heacock placing 4th in the 1600 meter, Kyle Minow placing 4th in the Shot Put, Rachel Rasmussen placing 3rd in the 3200 meter, and Abigail Martin placing 4th in the High Jump. Jaxon Bilbrey, in his first track meet, placed in three events, 8th in the 800, 6th in the High Jump, and 8th in the Triple Jump.

The team's next meet, in Baker, featured tough competition from around Eastern Montana, including such powerhouses as Miles City, Glendive, Glasgow, and Sidney, as well as top athletic smaller schools such as Fairview and Scobey.

"Baker was a tough meet," Coulter commented. "Even though our kids didn't place as well as they did at Laurel, a number of them had personal records in their events, and that's something to be proud of."

We've noted the personal records on the stats found at the end of this article.

Top performers for Broadus included Kyle Minow, who placed 5th in the Javelin, and Abigail Martin, who placed 5th in the High Jump.

When we talked to Jerry on Monday, the Colstrip Twilight Meet, originally scheduled for this Tuesday, was likely to be rescheduled due to the Monday snowstorm. The Junior High Track team will have their first meet this Friday, also at Colstrip.
