The Broadus School Board Trustees met Monday evening for their monthly meeting. All members of the board were in attendance, with Raquel Mader and Waylon Billing attending the meeting via phone.
The first item on the agenda was the hiring of staff for the 2021-22 school year. Motions were made and unanimously passed to hire the current tenured staff, as well as the staff that will be receiving tenure in the coming year (including Caroline Johnson, Rebecca Boman, and Jen Zellers), and classified staff.
Coaches for the 2021-22 school year were hired, sans the spring sports, which will be on the agenda in June, since the current seasons for those sports are ongoing at this time.
A motion to hire for three open teaching positions failed by a vote of 3-2. The motion was to hire Ashley Fleming as Elementary Teacher, Shauna Schaffer as Title 1 Teacher, and Clayton Scott as Ag Ed Teacher.
A subsequent motion to hire Schaffer and Scott passed unaminously.
A third motion was then made to hire Fleming, with the motion failing by a vote of 3 votes to 2.
The board then discussed their next move for hiring the Elementary Teaching position; a hiring committee will meet this Thursday to decide on moving forward.
Erick McConnon was then hired as a summer worker.
Several open coaching and activity positions were hired, including Kristie Lanke as the Junior High Girls Basketball Coach, Drew Anne Gatlin as the Assistant Track Coach, Cathy Landa as a Junior High Track Volunteer, and Clayton Scott as the FFA Advisor.
The board then updated a series of board policies, and voted on a measure to continue updates on the school’s heating/ventilation system over the summer. The heating units in each room have been slowly updated or replaced over the years to use digital controls, as opposed to the old pneumatic controls, which have proven problematic to find someone to work on. The updates this summer should complete the project, according to Superintendent Hansen.
Substitute teacher pay was discussed, with the board passing a motion to increase daily pay from $75 to $85, effective in the 2021-22 school year.
The next board meeting will take place Monday, May 10th.
