During a recent chat with the Powder River County Commissioners, we learned that funding has been received from the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration and the State for hangars at the airport in Broadus.
Since the BDX airport was moved from southwest of Broadus to its current location northwest of town in 2005, there has been no storage or cover for airplanes. The new project is looking to remedy that situation, with the addition of a 60x140’ building with a heated mechanic’s bay and a pilot’s lounge, and five t-hangars for aircraft storage.
A solution to aircraft storage at the airport has been in demand for years, and a letter sent out by the commissioners to local aircraft owners met with favorable responses in regards to providing hangars at the airport. In addition to the local use, those traveling through will now have a place to keep their aircraft safe from hailstorms and other weather, while the commissioners are hoping the heated shop may provide a draw for an aircraft mechanic to provide annuals.
Funding for the hangars will come with a 90-10 split for the expected $700,000-800,000 project, with 90% coming from an FAA allotment, and the state providing a $20,000 grant. This leaves around $50,000-60,000 coming from the county’s coffers to pay for the project.
Plans are to rent out the t-hangars, with the possibility of building additional, separate hangars if demand and funding warrant the need. Planning and design will take place this year, with construction expected to take place in 2022.
