Ahoy, mateys! Broadus Elementary celebrated "I Love to Read" month in February. With the help of Captain Bookbeard (Cody Earley), Barb Mitchell and Kendra Hartman, students were led on a pirate reading adventure. Each class had a goal that would help them destroy the Book Bandit ship by firing a cannon ball. By the end of February, the ship went down after every class met their goal! Kindergarten and third grade students read for 15 minutes each school night. First grade read for 28 hours and 16 minutes. Second grade had a goal to read 3,360 minutes during the month, but ended with a total of 7,085 minutes which totals 118 hours of reading! Fourth grade also surpassed their goal of 3,600 minutes by reading 5,118 total minutes! Fifth grade spent 13,866 minutes reading and sixth grade had a strong finish with 8,801 minutes. Way to go!!
The last day was full of classroom celebrations! Kindergarten and third grade celebrated with Mrs. Hartman, Mrs. Isaak and Mrs. Rogge with a book scavenger hunt. Treasures were hidden among the books in the library. Students finding their treasure were treated with a prize or a blast of silly string! First and second grade enjoyed a scavenger hunt on the playground with Mrs. Emmons and Mrs. Lambert. Several clues led the kids to a hidden treasure chest filled with surprises! Mrs. Swenson, Mrs. Zellers and Mrs. Johnson created escape rooms for the fourth through sixth graders to solve with treasures rewarded when completed. Although, "I Love to Read" month is over, there is no doubt the students of Broadus Elementary will continue to chart their course to being successful readers!
