Steps for Charity Challenge

Week 2

I FEEL GOOD!

“Did you know it’s 240 pedometer steps to dance to James Brown’s “I Feel Good,” reported Dee Katus, Power Walkers

And a little friendly competition…taken from a cell phone text conversation: “Not sure if you guys looked at the reports put in for Steps for Charity, but the Jacam Joggers are beating the J Walkers, and that’s all that really matters.”

Steps for Charity is a Feel Good event! Walking feels good and so does raising money for local charities.

The charities highlighted this week are:

Amanda Gaskill Spay and Neuter Fund. Amanda Gaskill was a beloved neighbor, friend and cat lover. A fund for spaying and neutering cats was established in her memory at the Broadus Vet Clinic. Each year, the vet clinic provides low cost services to care for and manage the feral cats in our community.

The teams and team members this year who are walking for cat care are:

• H2 MeOw Raymond Ragsdale, Donna Wilson, Crystal Mitchell and Kelda Page Sponsored by Gone Ropin’Construction

• Purrfect Moovers Lynne Pedersen, Cindy May, Jessica Rumph, Liz McRae, Sponsored by the Broadus Vet Clinic

• Soleful Strutters Sharon Billing, Kristina Ryan, Carole Richards and Jeanne Rogge

American Diabetes Association is the charity chosen by the Penguin Pacers who are Randy Sullivan, Brenda Czoer, Thelma Taylor and Mary Smith.

The mission of the American Diabetes Association is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. This group of Steps for Charity walkers has friends and family members, who have been affected by this disease. They understand first-hand the importance of the American Diabetes Association.

“For every minute you walk, you can extend your life by as much as two minutes.” - Robert Sweetgall

Want to increase your walking? Here are some easy ways to add more steps into your day:

• Park a bit farther from the entrance to your workplace, school, grocery store, restaurants, etc.

• Catch up with a friend by walking around the block while you chat on the phone.

• Have a walking meeting with coworkers or walk with friends rather than meeting for coffee.

• Take an extra lap around the perimeter of the grocery store before checking out.

• Walk in place during television commercials.

• Set an alarm at the top of every hour as a reminder to walk around the house, even if only for a few minutes.

• Join the Steps for Charity walking program!
