Competitors from fourth, fifth, and sixth grades competed in the PR County Spelling Bee, held last week in the courtroom. In a change from previous years, the classes initially competed against their classmates in the classroom, with the top five spellers from each class moving on to the county competition. Due to COVID-19 protocols, parents and spectators were not allowed into the courtroom during the county competition, but the event was recorded and aired online by Hayle Barbero.
Judges at the county competition included Raquel Mader, Tom Herzog, and Lori Fortner, while Pam Nisley announced the competition. Vanna Byrd acted as recorder for the event, while Nancy Gaskill and Mary Washburn kept track of the students.
The top three spellers won cash prizes of $30, $20, and $10 for first, second, and third respectively, while medals were also awarded to the top three spellers.
Brooke Escott spelled the word "gooey" to bring home the first place medal, while Laney Williams came in second, followed by Shiloh Stiegelmeier in third.
Following the event, the spellers were transported back to the school by John Blain, where they enjoyed a pizza lunch courtesy of Seabeck Pizza.
Event Organizer Molly Lloyd told us that she's looking forward to next year, where 7th and 8th graders will also be invited to compete.
