The Broadus wrestlers took to the mat at the Forsyth Mixer last week. Broadus Head Coach Frankie Schoonover told us that though Broadus wrestlers didn’t see many wins, he thought they were fundamentally strong as a group.
145 lb Junior Corbin Irish wrestled in his first matches, after missing the beginning of the season. Zach Valdez of Colstrip won by pinning Irish in 2:47, and Brenen Hager of Miles City pinned Irish in 49 seconds. Broadus Coach Frankie Schoonover told us that though Irish lost the matches, he was surprisingly adept for being off the competitive mat since last season.
Cale Emmons lost to Lincoln Reich of Chinook 11-7, and to Zach Cox of Colstrip by pin in 51 seconds. Schoonover said that Emmons will be bumping up from 170 to 182 in the next mixer, this Tuesday at Baker.
Alex Edwards lost by pin to Drake Berreth of Chinook; Schoonover commented that Edwards is making strides every week in his first year of wrestling.
Gavin Severeide wrestled two tough matches against Rylin Burns of Colstrip and Jaiden Gibson of Miles City, losing by being pinned in each match. Schoonover said Severeide has shown that he’s willing to work to improve on the mat, but his lack of experience is showing when it comes time to wrestle more experienced opponents.
Riggin Schaffer lost to Zaden Heck of Colstrip by pin, and to Camron Reilly of Forsyth. Frankie said Riggin has been working on his diet, which has helped him with his energy levels on the mat.
Seth McDowell, wrestling at 138 lbs, lost to Camron Reilly of Forsyth.
Dakota Holbrook scored the only win on the mats for Broadus, pinning TJ Fulton of Forsyth in 3:22. Holbrook was later pinned by Tyler Schoen of Chinook in 48 seconds. Schoonover commented that Schoen forced Dakota to wrestle his style of match, which Holbrook was unable to counter, forcing the pin. He mentioned something former Broadus Coach Derrick Tvedt had taught him: “For every move there are two counters, and for every one of those counters there are two more counters.” He continued, “What that means is that when we find ourselves wrestling the opponent’s style of match, we find a way to make it work for us. And that’s something we’re still working on as a team, and we’re steadily improving.”
Broadus will next wrestle this weekend on the road, at Glasgow on Friday, and Malta on Saturday. The Glasgow Mixer should be a gut check for the Hawks, as Schoonover tells us that Glasgow has five returning state champions to contend with.
Next weekend, on Saturday, the 20th, fans are welcome to come watch the Broadus wrestlers compete against each other on the mats in gym, beginning at 1 pm. The event is free to the public; mask wear and social distancing guidelines are in effect.
