The Lady Hawk Varsity team won both of their games over the weekend, beating both Wibaux and Custer/Hysham. On Friday, the Lady Hawks hosted the Wibaux Lady Longhorns. Broadus Head Coach Ashley Emmons had a plan going into the game to counter Wibaux's strong inside game – pressure. During an interview on Monday, Emmons told us that Wibaux has a young corps of guards, and applying pressure to those guards and preventing them from getting the ball into their forwards and post player would disrupt their game plan. The Lady Hawks were able to capitalize on their coach's plan, racking up 15 steals, which they were able to convert into points, as 22 of the Lady Hawks points came off of turnovers.
Broadus came out to a first quarter lead 14-8, and kept that lead throughout the game, going ahead up 12 points in the fourth quarter. Final score: Lady Hawks 42, Lady Longhorns 36.
Mia Mader had a standout performance for the Lady Hawks, scoring 14 points, with six of those points coming from three point land. Mader also had five steals, a pair of rebounds, and two assists against Wibaux.
Abi Krantz scored 13 points, while racking up six rebounds, two steals, and a blocked shot.
On Saturday, the Lady Hawks traveled to Hysham to play Custer/Hysham.
Ashley said that she's been emphasizing to her team that the intensity level during warm-ups before the game translates directly into the intensity level coming onto the court to start the game. A lackadaisical warm-up makes for a slow start to the game. During the warm-up for the Custer/Hysham game, Emmons pushed the pace and intensity, and it seemed to pay off for the Lady Hawks, as Broadus came out to an early lead, as Mia Mader scored in the first 24 seconds off a steal.
The Lady Hawks kept that early momentum and the lead throughout the game, winning 53-39. Broadus had an impressive 31 steals in the game, and made 34 of their points off of turnovers.
Aspen Krantz led the Lady Hawks in scoring, with 12 points, while bringing down 9 rebounds.
On Tuesday, the Lady Hawks faced Ekalaka, at home in Broadus. Ekalaka sat second in the conference going in to the game behind Melstone, at 4-1 in conference games, with Broadus in fourth at 3-2, behind Jordan.
Emmons told us that the key to beating Ekalaka was to protect the three point line, and prevent the open shot in general, as Ekalaka's Lady Bulldogs are a good shooting team. Ekalaka displayed their shooting prowess early, going up 33-10 over Broadus at the half. Final score: Ekalaka 55, Broadus 34.
Broadus will head to Terry on Friday, and Plevna on Saturday. Terry currently sits at 0-7, and Plevna at 1-2. Broadus will then host Plevna next Tuesday, with a JV Boys game at 4:30, and the Varsity Girls at 6 PM. The Lady Hawks are now 3-3 in conference play, after their loss to Ekalaka.
