Hawk Boys win three games in five days

The Broadus Hawk Boys Basketball Team defeated Wibaux and Custer/Hysham over the weekend.

Broadus came out to an early lead against Wibaux, on Friday, and kept the pedal to the floor throughout the game, eventually winning 58-35. Broadus Head Coach Mike Richards told us that the game flowed well, with a combined 13 fouls between teams, and Broadus limiting their turnovers to 9.

Broadus led in every offensive category, and were aided greatly by a big game from Dillon Gee who had a double/double, scoring 20 while coming down with 10 rebounds. Gee also had 2 assists, 3 steals, and 3 blocks. Marcus Mader had 11 points on the evening, with 5 rebounds, and 9 assists.

As a team, Broadus shot decently from two point distance, sinking 53.5% of those shots, but from beyond the arc their performance was not great, only making 3 of 20 from three point land.

Defensively, the Hawks performed well, limiting Wibaux to only one quarter with a double-digit score, as Wibaux scored 11 in the second quarter. The Longhorns only scored 8 points per quarter in each of the other three quarters.

On Saturday, Broadus played Custer/Hysham at Hysham. The Hawks led 14-8 after the first quarter, while the Rebels battled back to within two at halftime, trailing the Hawks 16-18 going into the locker rooms. Custer/ Hysham briefly took the lead in the third quarter, before Broadus went on a tear, going up as much as 17 in the fourth quarter, finishing the game up 49-37 for the Broadus win.

While the Wibaux game was notable for a fairly small number of turnovers, the Custer/ Hysham game was the opposite, with 47 combined turnovers. Broadus had 19 of those turnovers. Coach Richards was not happy with the turnovers, nor was he thrilled with the Hawks' shooting, as they sunk just over 1/3 of their shots on the evening.

"We've gotta be stronger with the ball," he noted. "Cutting down on the turnovers and sinking more shots is our goal."

Dillon Gee had another standout night on Saturday, scoring 19 points, and snagging 15 rebounds, along with 4 steals, 3 blocks, and an assist.

The weekend wins moved Broadus to third in the conference, trailing Terry at 6-0 and Melstone at 4-1.

Broadus faced off at home against Ekalaka on Tuesday. The Hawks had previously beaten the Bulldogs in Ekalaka, 59-47, and this time around the Hawks were in for more of a fight, as the teams sparred back and forth until the fourth quarter, where the combined shooting of Dillon Gee and Marcus Mader cemented the Hawk's lead, with a final score of 65-52. Gee had 20 points on the game, Mader 11. Stats for the Ekalaka game will be printed at a later date.

The Hawks will travel to face an undefeated Terry Terrier team on Friday. Coach Richards tells us that Terry has three foreign exchange students that have been lighting it up, as Terry traveled to Melstone over the weekend, winning 47-44 over the Broncs.

The Hawks will then travel to Jordan on Saturday, playing at 5:30 in Jordan, for a non-conference game, as Broadus plays Jordan three times this year, with only two of those games counting in the conference standings. Jordan currently sits at 0-5 in the conference standings, and 1-6 overall.
