Hawks pick up two more wins

The Broadus Hawks came out to a slow start against Jordan, last Tuesday in the team's first conference game. With a 10-6 lead going into the second quarter, Broadus seemed to come alive, finding their wind and going into the locker room at halftime with a 28-16 lead. Broadus was able to capitalize on Jordan's mistakes to make an impressive 21 points off of turnovers, finishing the game up 51-35.

Broadus Head Coach Mike Richards told us that Broadus still needed to clean up their gameplay, as the Hawks had 20 turnovers against Jordan.

Marcus Mader led the Hawks in scoring with 18 points, while freshman Josh Rasmussen went 3 for 4 from beyond the arc, sinking three 3 point shots. Ninth graders contributed greatly to the Broadus win, with a bevy of Freshmen playing the last few minutes of the fourth quarter, scoring 14 points in said quarter.

Broadus once again got off to a slow start against Ekalaka, in a game Friday at Ekalaka. The Hawks trailed 19-21 at the half, but came alive in the third quarter, scoring 27 points, and eventually winning the game 59-47.

Coach Richards had previously coached at Ekalaka, and said he considered the win as a personal victory, as during his head coaching experience in Ekalaka his team had only lost three times at home. Now that he's coaching at Broadus, this is his first win against Ekalaka at their gym.

Dillon Gee put up impressive numbers, scoring 24 while bringing down 11 rebounds. Marcus Mader was once again solid, with 8 assists to two turnovers, a 4 to 1 assist to turnover ratio which shows good ball control from the guard position. Johnny Richards had 14 points, 12 of those coming from three point land.

On Saturday, Broadus hosted a tough Melstone team. The Hawks came out to an explosive lead, going up 20-12 in the first quarter. Melstone was able to battle back after a series of fouls by Broadus, gaining the lead in the third quarter and scoring double digit points through the second half while keeping Broadus to single digit scoring per quarter in the second half. Melstone would win the game, 59-43.

Richards commented: "Melstone's level of play is where we need to be. They shot 70% from the field compared to our 40%. We need to get our shooting together between now and the next time we face them, the last week of the season in Melstone."

Broadus is now 2-1 in conference play, and will host Wibaux this Friday. Wibaux sits at 3-1 in the conference, having beaten Jordan, Custer/Hysham, and Ekalaka in a close game. The Boys JV is scheduled to begin at 4 pm, with the Boys Varsity beginning at 7.

Broadus will play at Hysham against Custer/Hysham Saturday, departing at 9:15 am. Boys JV is scheduled to begin at 2:30, Boys Varsity at 5:30. Custer /Hysham is 0-3 in conference play. Broadus hosts Ekalaka next Tuesday, with Boys JV at 4, Boys Varsity at 7. Ekalaka is 0-4 in conference games.
