Superintendent's Report

By Broadus Schools Superintendent Jim Hansen

It is my hope that you and your families had an enjoyable Christmas and the beginnings of a productive and enjoyable new year.

As we move into 2021, my main goal for this District is the recruitment and retention of staff. As I stated in a recent superintendent meeting, I believe the number of teaching openings in Montana will increase significantly this year. Your school district has implemented a student loan forgiveness program and developed and purchased staff housing in an effort to attract employees. Additionally, we offer a competitive salary and benefit package compared to other Montana school districts. Recruiting and maintaining an effective staff will be challenging over the next few years. Excellent educators do not just regurgitate content, they forge relationships, instill work ethic, maintain high expectations for all students, teach values and ethics, and become valuable members to this community.

Lastly, the board will discuss the superintendent’s evaluation at their January meeting. Most superintendent evaluations are conducted in executive session. Typically superintendents are evaluated by their board of trustees annually in December or January. Superintendent contracts can be for a period of up to three years. Since the average stay of a Montana superintendent is less than three years in a district, you generally see numerous superintendent openings, particularly in January and February.

Best wishes to all of you for a productive and healthy 2021.
