Fitness Classes Start in February

By PR Extension Office

“We’re excited to offer activities to improve health and increase physical activity,” explained Morgan Weller, Community Health Coordinator in Powder River County. Weller will be co-teaching the Arthritis Exercise classes at the Senior Center and assisting with Yoga in the Courthouse Lobby.

Arthritis Exercise will be held Mondays and Wednesdays, at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., at the Senior Center. This gentle exercise program includes activities to build strength, improve range of motion, balance and increase endurance. Instructors include Julie Riley, Extension Agent, and Weller.

Tai Ji Quan Moving for Better Balance (TJQMBB) is a class that will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:00 a.m. at the Senior Center. The class is designed to improve balance, mobility, walking and physical and mental well-being. Riley will teach these classes.

The movements in TJQMBB are based upon Tai Ji Quan and have been specifically tailored to train balance, self-awareness and controlling body movements in performing various activities of daily life. TJQMBB has been proven effective in reducing incidence of falls by 55 to 58 percent in older adults.

Yoga classes will be held on Mondays at noon and on Tuesdays at 7: 00 a.m., in the Courthouse Lobby. Dr. George Ceremuga will be teaching the Yoga with assistance from Weller. Mats are provided, or participants can bring their own.

An option for VIRTUAL Arthritis Exercise classes with Tara Andrews, Custer County Extension Agent, is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:30 a.m. Contact the Powder River Extension Office at 436-2424 for more information.

Finally, Steps for Charity organized by Powder River Trails and the Extension Office runs February and March. Register a 4-member team and track steps taken each week. Pedometers are available for sale at the Extension office. The top three winning teams choose which charity receives part of the registration fees paid by participants in the Steps for Charity event.
