Dear Editor;
November 11th is Veteran’s Day. This is the 75th year after the end of WWII. As a very small child I remember being held and hugged by lots of veterans, WWI neighbors and many returning vets from WWII. While I was too young to understand the conversations, I could tell they really respected each other and helped each other. Many of the vets were home on leave and re-enlisting. Korea came and more vets left for service. All of the vets were honored for their services in my community of Butte Creek and the surrounding area.
Over the years I’ve realized the things I learned from those vets:
The children are all of our responsibilities.
Stand for the flag; guys take off the hat.
All veterans should be honored and respected, no matter when or where they served.
Get an education learn a trade. It will help in job hunting when you come home.
Always take pride in our nation and in your community.
Firearms are serious business, not toys!!!
Receiving letters and care packages were very important to the vets.
A lot has changed since the late 1940s, but some things are still the same. All of our military people serving anywhere in the world or state-side need to be respected and prayed for everyday.
Sincerely,
Pat Hanlan
VFW Auxiliary
