1990 Hawks broke, tied 14 school records

Even though the Broadus Hawk football team finished the 1990 season with a less-than-enviable win-loss record their success shines clear. Fourteen school records were either tied or broken during the eight game season, according to statistics compiled by Assistant Coach Todd Harris.

The 1990 Hawks took over the record for total points scored by a team during a single season with 198, surpassing the 155 point record set by Coach Lynn Safranski’s team last year.

The 1990 Hawks also set the new record for the most yards gained in a single season with 2,539.

Shawn Samuelson, a junior, has already broken the current record for most yards gained passing. Samuelson’s record currently stands at 2,168 yards. Jason Evans held the previous record, 1,182 yards. Samuelson also holds the new single season record for yards gained passing at 1,560. That mark is exactly twice the previous record, 783 yards, set by Jason Evans during the 1985 season. On the defensive side of the field Samuelson also performed exceptionally well, finishing with 78 solo tackles for second place in the Hawk record books. Todd Harris still holds onto the record, 85 individual tackles, set in 1987.

Tight end Brian Viker, another outstanding junior, had an impressive year also. Viker now holds the most yards receiving in a career in only his second year as a starter. Viker’s total yardage now stands at 1,106, eclipsing Hank Phillippi’s record of 782 set in the 1980’s. Viker has the record for most passes caught in a single game with nine. Bill Collins holds the record, seven passes, caught in 1983. Viker moved into second place for most touchdowns in a single season with 8. Tary Hanson holds the first place record with nine touchdowns, caught during the 1989 season.

Outstanding junior athlete Bryan Bogner tied and broke records on both offense and defense. Most of his records were on defense, although he also had a fine year on offense. Bogner now holds the record for most interceptions in a single game with three. Six former Hawks had two single game interceptions. The young man tied Bill Janssen’s 1984 record of most interceptions in a season with five. Bogner took over first place and tied for second place for most tackles for a single game. Bogner had 18 tackles one game and 15 in another. Harris held the record previously with 15. Bogner joins a host of other Hawks in most fumbles recovered in a single game with two. On offense, Bogner is now in second place behind Viker in two categories. He had eight receptions in a single game (Viker had nine) and had 37 receptions for the season (Viker had 48).

Senior running back Jamie Reinholz tied Frank Perry’s 1988 record for most touchdowns in one game with four.
