Last week the MHSA Executive board voted to delay the start of high school winter sports, in an effort to flatten the curve in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Practices for basketball and wrestling will now begin on December 7th, as opposed to a late November original start for practice. Competitions delayed until the first week of January. These plans may be updated at the November MHSA meeting, and changes may occur at any time as the seasons progress.
Adjustments to the spectator numbers for tournaments in volleyball and football have also been made, pending the approval of county health boards. The new numbers are:
• Up to a maximum of six spectator passes per uniformed player
• Up to a maximum of four spectator passes for each alternate and manager
• Up to a maximum of two spectator passes for members of the coaching staff
• Up to a maximum of two spectator passes for each cheerleader up to 12 total cheerleaders.
Bands will not be allowed for postseason play, nor will student sections.
Broadus Activities Director Mike Richards tells us the spectator numbers apply only to tournaments, and locals will still make determinations on spectator numbers for regular season games. Currently Broadus is allowing 50 out of town spectators, and up to 200 local spectators for volleyball games.
Speech and drama competitions will be held beginning December 1st, with plans to hold the meets virtually. The state Cross Country meet will now take place over two days on October 23rd and 24th, instead of the original one-day event. Broadus competitors will run on Saturday, the 24th.
