Broadus hosted the MonDak Thunder football team last Friday. MonDak is a coop team from Westby, Montana, located in extreme northeastern Montana, and Grenora, North Dakota. MonDak has had Class C 6 Man State Championships, and made the move up to 8-man football after their enrollment increased. They continue to play good football at the 8-man level, as seen last Friday in Broadus, as they steam-rolled the Hawks 57-6.
Broadus was coming off a long stretch off from playing football, as they had a bye week followed by a rescheduling of their game against Circle due to COVID-19 in the Broadus school system.
Broadus Head Coach Ross Randall told us that the long layoff between games seemed to show up on the offensive side of the ball early in the game against MonDak, as Broadus players had trouble connecting with one another, running incorrect routes and generally seeming cold.
MonDak, on the other hand, was hot right out of the gate, scoring early and blocking a Broadus punt.
Broadus was able to put together a good drive in the second quarter on a Johnny Richards run, but otherwise the Hawk offense was stagnant throughout the game, as MonDak's defense limited the Hawks to just over 100 yards of total offense on the game, forcing five fumbles against the Hawks and recovering four to turn the ball over to the Thunder offense.
The Friday loss puts the Hawks at 2-3 on the season, with a road game at Fairview scheduled for this Friday. Fairview is another very tough team from the northeast, sitting at 5-1 on the season. The Hawks are currently healthy going into the home stretch of games.
Four teams from the Eastern C will advance to the playoffs, and the Hawks hopes are still alive depending on the outcome of the last few weeks of play, and a potential tie breaker. If Ekalaka beats Circle this weekend, the Hawks are out of the playoffs, but if Circle wins, the Hawks will play Circle next Tuesday in Broadus, and will need to beat Circle to advance. The Hawks will then need to beat the 0-6 Forsyth Dogies on October 23 for the Broadus Homecoming game to force the tiebreaker. If Ekalaka wins against Circle this weekend, Circle will travel to Broadus to play on October 30th.
