Students at Broadus Schools are now able to receive free school lunch through December, due to a grant awarded to the school. The grant is part of a free summer lunch program, which was put into place due to COVID-19. Broadus applied for and received a waiver to use the funds in the fall. All enrolled students in Broadus Public Schools are now able to eat free of charge through December 31st.
The school is encouraging those families who are eligible for the Free and Reduced Price program to complete the application, in preparation for January 2021, when the regular pricing structure is planned to go back into effect. The Free and Reduced Price program applies to families who make up to 130% of the federal poverty levels. Eligibility guidelines are available at the Montana OPI site, and were printed on page 5 of our August 27th issue.
The National School Lunch program was started by President Harry Truman in 1946, and is administered federally by the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service. The program helps provide meals to over 30 million children in the United States every year.
